That was one of the most memorable sentences I’ve overheard after coaching.

Last week at Fit Future Training Academy, we had a new 11-year-old boy join us for a trial session. At the start, he absolutely hated the idea of being there and was even shouting at his mum to leave.

With some gentle encouragement from both his mum and myself, we managed to get him settled into the session.

Throughout the class I was supportive, patient, and thoughtful on adaptions to regress certain difficult exercises.

As he was leaving, I overheard him ask:

“Mummy, can I come back next week?!”

Coaching young athletes has taught me far more than I expected. Especially when you’ve got 21 of them in the same room!

It’s taught me patience, communication, adaptability, and the importance of making training enjoyable. You can give the best programming to a child, but unless they truly do enjoy it, it just won’t work.

Seeing athletes grow in confidence and develop a positive relationship with exercise is one of the most rewarding parts of coaching for me.

Grateful for every opportunity to learn and improve as a coach, especially this early on in my career 💪
